Assistant District Attorney
Derek K. Brown is an Assistant District Attorney with the 6B Prosecutor’s Office serving Hertford, Bertie, and Northampton counties. Mr. Brown is associated with the Firm as a member of Encore Sports Mangagement, a Division of the Brown Law Firm, P.C. Mr. Brown is no longer a practicing attorney with the Firm and is forbidden under the laws of North Carolina from giving legal advise.
In the fall of 2010, Mr. Brown was certified through the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) as a Certifed Contract Advisor and later registered as a Athlete Agent with the North Carolina Secretary of State. Later that year, Mr. Brown formed Encore Sports Management – A Division of the Brown Law Firm, P.C. (Encore Sports.) Encore Sports then partnered with JDW Sports, a division of the Law Offices of James D. Williams, P.A. to continue a 30 year tradition of experienced, caring, and professional representation to athletes and their families.
In 1996, Mr. Brown was admitted to practice law in the state of North Carolina and joined the Firm. Mr. Brown enjoyed the honor of being admitted to practice at the age of 23. In 2000, Mr. Brown associated with the law firm of W. Darrell Whitley in Denton, NC where he practiced criminal defense in Alamance, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Guilford, Moore, Montgomery, and Randolph counties for a year and a half. In January 2003, Mr. Brown had the honor of working for the United States House of Representatives as a Legislative Counsel under the employ of Congressman Frank W. Ballance, Jr. and later Congressman G.K. Butterfield serving the constituents of the 1st Congressional District of North Carolina. In the 2005, Mr. Brown joined District Attorney Valerie Asbell as an Assistant District Attorney where he served until the spring of 2006. Mr. Brown returned to the Firm in 2006 to continue his practice. In January 2013, Mr. Brown returned to the service of the State of North Carolina as an Assistant District Attorney with District Attorney Asbell.
Mr. Brown attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where he majored in Chemical Engineering. He received numerous awards for Academic Achievement and was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Mr. Brown received his Juris Doctorate from the Norman A. Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University, where North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers honored Mr. Brown.
Mr. Brown is married to Joni Marie and has three loving children, Austin Keane, Alanna Louisa, and Myles Thomas.
